The Twice-a-Week Breakthrough

Over the past few weeks, dozens of BNET readers have kept time logs for me. While peoples days look very different, most of you have shared similar goals. You want to exercise more (no one ever wants to exercise less!) You want time to pursue creative projects like writing a novel or painting.

The problem? Its hard to see how you can fit exercise or creative time into a busy workday. I dont want to wake up at 5:30 every morning! people say, or they note how crazy things get in their offices around lunch time, or how drained they are at night.

But this is why its good to think in terms of 168 hours, rather than 24. To get in shape, you have to exercise often, but you do not have to exercise every day. You could work out twice on weekends, and then choose just two times during the week to fit your workouts in.

For many people, this is a big breakthrough. Twice is far less daunting than daily. If you dont like waking up at 5:30 AM, but thats the only time during the week you can go running, no worries! You only have to get up that early twice. The nights before you can get to bed on time and then knock this item off your to-do list as the sun is coming up.

Likewise, you may not be able to slip away from your desk during lunch every day, but you could do it twice. You may want to relax and watch TV on weekday evenings after a grueling commute, but you could skip one show on Tuesday and one on Thursday. Thats much easier to get your head around than doing something every day. Over time, it will become a habit, and if you enjoy your twice-a-week commitment enough, you may decide to scale it up.

Or not. Twice a week is still a lot better than nothing.

What do you make time for during the workweek?
