Old School Style for the Office Newb

TV drama Mad Men has created plenty of water-cooler buzz with its depiction of a 60s advertising firm before the upheavals that would shake the country later in the decade. But even more than the archaic gender roles at the Sterling Cooper Advertising Agency, what has attracted the attention of many cubicle warriors across the land is the chic business style of top ad man Don Draper.

Office newbies may be stereotyped as all wanting to come in to work in jeans and flip flops, but plenty of style conscious younger people have been impressed by the put together work wardrobes of Mad Men and are striving to get the look (even if only for Halloween).

Lots of style blogs and men’s magazines have commented on Mad Men mania, but today style site Omiru is offering the idiot’s guide to dressing like Don Draper, boiling down the essence of the look into easy to emulate bullet points that even the most fashion-phobic could follow:

Just say no to shapeless suits. The trim silhouette makes you look slimmer and taller, no matter what your personal architecture. Medium Gray Sharkskin: If you have only one suit in your wardrobe, make it a gray one.? A gray suit goes everywhere, and it works even when a black suit is too somber.? That extra sheen is from the sharkskin fabric, a popular material in the 1960s and 1980s. Diagonal Pockets: The slight diagonal of the pockets adds to the slimming effect. Narrow Lapels: Notice the trimmer than usual notched lapels. Side Vents: Instead of a single vent at the center back, two side vents are all the better for a fitted silhouette. Sleeve Length: The perfect sleeve length for a jacket shows about a half inch of shirt sleeve.

Really want to go all out in your pursuit of the Draper look? The New York Times (of all places) is offering tips on how to get Mad Men hair.
