Nearly one out of three adults has some kind of cardiovascular disease. Do you know what would you do if your coworker suddenly collapsed?

In all cases of sudden cardiac arrest (when the heart stops beating) that occur out of hospitals, only 26% of the time did a bystander attempt CPR, and less than 8 percent of people who have an out-of-hospital?sudden cardiac arrest survive. That shockingly low rate is because most people don’t feel qualified. Only about 2 to 5 percent of Americans are CPR trained, said ER doctor?Bentley Bobrow, M.D.. Many of us also worry about causing harm to the victim or are put off by the complexity of performing mouth to mouth?resuscitation. Yet,?bystander CPR can double or triple a victims chance of survival.

It doesn’t have to be so hard. Recent studies have found that hands-only CPR–simply doing compressions on a victim’s chest–is at least as effective as conventional CPR with mouth-to-mouth and the American Heart Association has endorsed it for those without CPR training.

A new study by Dr. Bobrow and colleagues found that those people who watched a 60-second CPR video?were significantly more likely to step up and perform CPR, rather than helplessly standing by. ?Plus, they were more likely to do faster compressions, which are more effective in saving a life (100 compressions per minute is the recemmended rate).

Good to have a fast-paced song in your head to help you keep the pace and keep you calm. Here’s what the American Heart Association likes: think Bee Gees. The AHA does have longer videos and more comprehensive training programs for businesses to train their employees in CPR and using automated external defribillators (AEDs), which so many offices now have.

So take one minute from your busy day to watch this video.
