A survey from CareerBuilder of about 800 people who lost their jobs in the past year shows that 60 percent of the have found new jobs. Almost all of those new jobs– 88 percent–are full-time. The flip side to this, of course, is that 40 percent of those who lost their jobs in the past year are still unemployed. But given the quantity and sadness of all the stories about laid-off people who are unable to find jobs, not to mention the ugly screening practices used by some companies to exclude the unemployed from job openings, 60% seems pretty good.

Still, those jobs aren’t coming easy–plenty of people still taking pay cuts, moving to new cities, and changing industries to land new gigs. Here are some more specifics from the survey:

Pay cuts are a bit less common

Forty-five percent of those who got new jobs said they had to take a pay cut, down slightly from 47 percent last year. Twenty-seven percent said their new job pays more than the old one, up from 22 percent last year. The remaining 33 percent say their new paychecks are about the same size as their old ones.

Time to Move?

Of those who found new jobs, more than a third–36 percent–say they had to move to a new city or state. Of those who haven’t found new jobs yet, 38 percent said they would consider relocating for a position.

Don’t limit yourself to one industry.

More than half of those who did find jobs-54 percent-said they are now working in an entirely new field.

Entrepreneurship looks appealing

Some 27 percent of those who haven’t found a job yet are considering starting their own business.

Anxiety among those who are still looking

Those who haven’t found a job yet are increasingly anxious about their prospects. Their worry stems from:

Pressure to prove themselves (50 percent) Fear of the unknown (40 percent) New technologies they may not be familiar with (21 percent)

Do you think the job market is getting better? Worse? Are you looking for a job?
